Then, suddenly, when Alice was eleven, the Liddell family shut him out, and his relationship with Alice ended abruptly. ![]() Eventually he would capture her in his photographs, and transform the stories he told her into the luminous Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass. Dodgson met Alice in 1856, when she was almost four years old. But the exact nature of his relationship with Alice Liddell, daughter of the dean of his college, and the young girl who was his muse and subject, remains mysterious. Under the pen name Lewis Carroll he wrote two stunning classics that liberated children's literature from the constraints of Victorian moralism. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was a shy Oxford mathematician, reverend, and pioneering photographer. ![]() ![]() In a cabin in Bolinas, California, Orner thinks about his dead father and reads Breece D’J Pancake’s story “First Day of Winter,” which “gets every time. He ends thinking about his dead grandmother. ![]() In the first piece, ostensibly about how Orner likes to read, reflect, look around, and just listen at San Francisco’s General Hospital’s cafeteria, the author transitions to Chekhov’s “tender and sorrowful” story “The Bishop,” which he admires for how the author (a doctor) lovingly employs details. The pieces (some previously published) are literary hybrids, and the book becomes a series of “unlearned meditations that stumbles into memoir.” The big names (Kafka, Chekhov, Melville, Cheever, Bellow, etc.) are well-represented, but so too are those outside of the canon-e.g., Lyonel Trouillot, Álvaro Mutis, Bohumil Hrabal and his “lightning strike of a novel,” Too Loud a Solitude. When did you first discover your love for writing? ![]() I’m also married with two kids and I live for flavored coffee and macarons. Thanks for having me again! For those who don’t know me, I’m an author (most recently of Home Field Advantage), anthologist (with a brand-new anthology called At Midnight), editor (currently for the interactive fiction platform StoryLoom), and book blogger (for a number of sites, but most notably my own site-and Buzzfeed Books). Fairy tales have been spun for thousands of years and remain among our most treasured stories. ![]() ![]() ![]() Who knows? A reimagined Divergent could be the next big show that we obsess over each week, like WandaVision or The Mandalorian. After all, this is the age of reboots finding new life at streaming services. But that's not to say Tris and Four couldn't return in the future. So, Divergent 4, AKA Ascendant, will probably never see the light of day, after the studio's disappointment with the franchise, and the cast's disheartened reaction to being shifted over to TV. To be fair, while the Divergent series didn't break any box office records, it was still a relatively lucrative property ($765 million in total) which would also come with a pre-established fanbase if the franchise continued in another form. Surprisingly, a TV project was still in the works for quite some time, remaining in development until then end of 2019. Shailene Woodley officially left the fourth film in February 2017, after previously slamming the TV idea, and that was the final nail in the Ascendant coffin. ![]() ![]() It is as of May 2022 the best book I have encountered this year. ![]() Not only is this an epic journey it is written in a format that ties today to the past so well that it is engrossing and engaging at the same time. I borrowed this title through the KU program, this title having the option of listening. ![]() Before she can reclaim her life, she must leverage everything she was and everything she is to take him down and end the cycle of bloodshed for good.
